Welcome to Aim High Pinay

Authenticity, Hope, Purpose—it is from these three core concepts that the Aim High Pinay (AHP) was born, conceived by three life enthusiasts from the sunny Philippines.

In our natural authentic state, women are nurturing. We support each other. We were made to create. Our dream is to have a community of women where we can celebrate our innate qualities and then bring our gifts out to the world. Our tribe will be diverse but bonded by our common goals – to aim higher and get to the next level of the life that we have today. Be part of our tribe. Let us get connected. Changing Our Life's Safe Word

Demystifying Our Fears So We Can Live Ferociously

As a risk manager, limit-setting and monitoring is a fundamental part of my work. I make sure that the unit I oversee abide by the risk limits that are given to them. Limits make us feel safe. And safe is good. However, there are times when what makes us feel safe also keeps us average.

Aim High Pinay’s theme for the month is about Freedom and Ferocity, two especially important attributes of a person who aims high in life. And aiming high and being average is like a square being placed in a triangle – they just do not fit.

I attempted to understand “freedom” by thinking about a person without it. The image that comes to mind is a person who is restrained not by an actual bondage but is limited by fear and beliefs that she imposed on herself. Fear can be crippling. No matter how many options are available to us, sometimes fear can blind us such that we do not see the options at all.  Freedom then is not living without fear, but not letting our lives be paralyzed by it.

This is the reason why we must stay on guard, because fear and negative beliefs guise themselves in the form of laziness and procrastination. When we are afraid to fail, it stops us from trying something new or from following our passion because it is safe to just be living an “okay” life. We delay taking action, or we do not act at all. Unfortunately, it is the same safety net that hinders us from being the best version of ourselves.

There is threat in “safety” when it holds us back from squeezing more juice out of life.

I have good and bad news.

The good news is – it is okay to FAIL (except maybe in skydiving). But kidding aside, we are not invalidating our feelings here. We honor them, that sometimes we are afraid to disappoint ourselves. We acknowledge that now and then, we want to save our faces and egos from the embarrassment of making mistakes. But because we want MORE OUT OF LIFE, we are giving ourselves permission to fail.

When we accept that failure can be an option, we open ourselves up to trying new ventures. We become more creative in reinventing ourselves, especially in these times of uncertainties and changing economic landscape. We become more daring to push a little more and follow our curiosities a bit further beyond our comfort zone. This space is the “growth zone”, and we can make it our safe space too.

They say that the most successful people are those with the greatest number of failures. What separates them from the rest is that they were persistent in trying different approaches until they are satisfied with the result. And then they continue to improve and explore other interests because it energizes them to be in the growth zone.

When we can free ourselves from the fear of failure, we too can be unstoppable in the pursuit of our goals. When we understand that the goal is to GROW, we too can be FEROCIOUS.

Now let me break the bad news – we have been living a lie. That is, when we fear, we are not in the present moment. We anticipate unfavorable scenarios that have not even happened. And because we are not in the moment, we can miss opportunities.

Thankfully, there are antidotes to this lie and one of which is freely available to us – our breath. When we breathe, we EXPAND, and we calm our nerves. Deep breaths ground us back to the present and we realize that we are still safe. We can respond rather than react or retract. We can think critically and see different angles and approaches to our growth targets.

There are risks that must be avoided at all cost, but there are also risks that are worth taking. An exploration of what makes us grow, what makes us happy, and what makes living an extraordinary life possible is definitely worth it.

Our Bodies and Our Built-in GPS

Our Bodies and Our Built-In GPS: navigating our way to the life of our dreams

Waze has been one of the most used apps on my phone. As soon as I get in the car, I would open the app and then set my destination.

I would religiously do this even at times when I already know the route by heart. I would still use Waze to manage my time for commute, thus affecting my activities for the day.  With over 100 million downloads in Play Store alone, I am guessing that the habit is not unique to me.

There is just comfort and security in knowing; not just in making sure that you are still on the right track, but also in knowing if you are taking the fastest, shortest, and most efficient route. It is truly amazing how technology moves us forward this way.

Our bodies, in all its shapes and glory, also have a built-in GPS. And listening to our bodies opens the app and activates our built-in Waze. It is like receiving a gift of inner compass that tells us if we are in the right direction, and if what we are doing is possibly the most efficient way that leads us to where we want to be.

For example, try saying the words, “I am strong. I am enough.” How do these words make you feel? If it helps, try saying it again even in a whisper, and pay attention to the lightness or heaviness it brings. “I am strong. I am enough.”

Now, let us focus on the sensation when we say, “I am not worthy. This is all I will ever be.”  Do you notice the contrast in how these affect your body? Try saying it again and pay attention to which part of the body feels heavy. “I am not worthy. This is all I will ever be.”

The difference in how these thoughts affect our bodies cannot be more striking than east and west. You see, when we tune in to our bodies, we become more receptive to our body wisdom telling us when the thoughts and beliefs that we carry are aligned with who we really are.

When we are more aware of the lightness and heaviness in our bodies, we can choose the thoughts and beliefs that push us forward, or at least make us feel safe and happy, however humble, or grand happiness means for us.

I must get clearer and say that we should not abuse our GPS by basing only our decisions on what feels good right here and now. Ultimately, the test will be if our thoughts, beliefs, decisions, and actions lead us to the kind of person that we hope to be. We can regularly ask ourselves, “are my actions and habits leading me to the kind of life that I want?” In the GPS app, this is our destination.

A remarkable feature was not forgotten here. Just like in Waze, when the signal seems low and we feel we are going off-track, we can always push a loving button to re-center. This means putting the most important thing in the center – you.

As we step into our tribe (our friends, families, and our budding Aim High Pinay community), I invite you to encourage each other, if not, let us encourage ourselves, to use more and more our inner compass. This is how all our other thoughts turn into beliefs – just by practice.

With practice, we can make awareness our most natural state. As soon as we get in our daily commute and journey, let us open our built-in compass, and then, always set our destination.

3 Ways to free yourself from self-doubt, frustration, and very low self-esteem

It’s the year 2020 and there’s just so much going on at the same time. We are all thinking about keeping ourselves, families, and friends all together safe, while trying to become winners—whether in career, business and relationships. This might get too overwhelming for someone who is just trying to keep everything together and make it through each day. And usually, in these difficult times, this is also the time when self-doubt, frustration and very low self-esteem begins—which is much worse than a virus. Yes, because having to deal with it every day, will affect your mental, emotional, and physical health. There is also no over-the-counter medicine for it. Only you can provide your own vaccine.

So amidst all the things that is happening today, let me remind you something: You have everything you need in you. You can turn things around and strengthen your core. You are worthy. You are capable and you will make it through. And how do we do that? Well, the health department would be anxious for violating safety precautionary measures against coronavirus, but I will suggest these three things anyway:

1. Don’t Wear your Mask.

Yes, you read it right. Stop wearing your Mask. By this I meant the mask that you wear to cover up something you are lacking of, or worse, pretending to be someone you are not. Aside from the fact that you cannot really hide it all the time and surely you cannot always watch your back with self-denial from a very powerful destructive force. Yes, it is true, it will give you immediate but short-term acceptance and happiness, but believe me, in the long run, it will just result to guilt and disappointment.

Self-acceptance is undeniably the best source of self-empowerment. As cliché as it may sound but I’ll drop it anyway: “If you cannot love, trust, and believe in yourself, dreams, and visions, then nobody else will.”

Today, I encourage you to take off your mask. Free yourself from all the lies and pretentions. Embrace your flaws and imperfections, own them! Nobody’s perfect. There will always be somebody better that you and there are people you are better than in so many ways. Only in being true to yourself, you can truly control and steer to wherever you want to go.

2. Stop washing your hands.

It’s okay, don’t come clean anymore. Recognize how imperfect you are. There is so much beauty in those imperfections and it is what makes you different among others. Let yourself be vulnerable and stop avoiding the things that hurt you. Here’s an example: You want to be a great cook but you’re too insecure about your cooking ‘cause your friends say it tastes bad? I mean after putting so much time and effort to it, that’s what you get? It hurts, doesn’t it? Well, no matter how hurtful it is, just take it constructively, accept it, and keep trying to improve yourself. Take it as a challenge. You shouldn’t let your mistakes, failures and difficulties stop you from developing your skills and doing the things you love the most.

Today, I encourage you to list down all the things and traits that you despise from yourself, the things you’re good at and things you could be great at. Acknowledge what you have and what you lack. Know your strength and weaknesses. Building on those strengths, and knowing how to deal with your limitations, can give you an even bigger boost.

Remember, growth begins when we start to accept our weaknesses. Develop your competencies, and go get it girl!

3. Get your “Corona.”

I know this is something we are all trying to avoid this year. But, yes, get your “corona” and spread it! Getting your crown means truly owning yourself and being the only person to let “you define yourself”. It also means being confident with who you are. Be proud of yourself, it’s not bad to appreciate and give yourself a little compliment.

This is also where the “Law of Attraction” plays an important role. Practice saying Positive things and affirmations. Remember: Words have Power. Here’s the thing, the I AMs coming out of your mouth that really comes from your heart will either bring you failure or success. What follows the I AM will always come looking for you. You always say you’re ugly and fat? Then all the stress and calories will come looking for you. Try doing it the other way, believe me, it will result to something better.

Wear your “Crown’, try spreading it. Notice the good in your friends, families, or even colleagues. Make their rainy days feel sunny and warm.

Have a great day, beautiful!
